RAJKOT: In line with states like Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra, Gujarat's Kansara community has demanded inclusion in Other Backward Class (OBC) category. Their demand has come at a time when parliamentary elections are on the anvil.

Apart from Gujarat government, Samast Kansara Samaj, a community-based organisation has also written a letter to National Commission for Backward Class (NCBC).

State president of Kansara community, Rajesh Kansara said their population is around 60,000 in the state, but it has produced only 10 government officers while only 14 professionals in banking and other financial institutions. Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra governments have already included Kansara community of their states in OBC and Gujarat should also follow them, said Kansara.

Natubhai Khakhi, founder president of the community, said traditionally the community is in the manufacturing of utensils at severely requiring OBC status for the upliftment of the community. At present, the community has only 336 qualified people including 43 medical professionals, 94 engineers, 47 advocates, 57 MBAs and chartered accountants, 31 IT professionals, 21 teachers and 19 other qualified professionals, which is too low in comparison with other communities, said Khakhi.
