कालिका अवतरण वर्णन

पूर्ण रूप से एक ही निष्ठा मे रहने वाले हृदय से समन्वित योगियों के द्वारा सांसारिक भय और पीड़ा के विनाश करने के अनेकों उपाय किए गये हैं। ऐसे भगवान् हरि के दोनों चरण कमल सर्वदा आप सबकी रक्षा करें जो समस्त योगीजनों के चित्त में अविद्या के अन्धकार को दूर हटाने के लिए सूर्य के समान हैं तथा यतिगणों की मुक्ति का कारण स्वरूप हैं। विभु के जन्म में शुद्धि-कुबुद्धि के हनन करने वाली है और इन जन्तुओं के समुदाय को विमोहित कर देने वाली है; वह माया आपकी रक्षा करे। समस्त जगती के आदिकाल में विराजमान पुरुषोत्तम ईश्वर को (जो नित्य ही ज्ञान से परिपूर्ण हैं उनको) प्रणाम करके मैं कालिका पुराण का कथन करूँगा।

हिमालय के समीप में विराजमान मुनियों ने परमाधिक श्रेष्ठ मार्कडेण्य मुनि के चरणों में प्रणिपात करके उनसे कर्मठ प्रभृति मुनिगण ने पूछा था कि हे भगवन्! आपने तात्विक रूप से समस्त शास्त्रों और अंगो के सहित सभी वेदों को सब भली-भाँति मन्थन करके जो कुछ भी साररूप था वह सभी भाँति से वर्णन कर दिया है। हे ब्रह्मन्! समस्त वेदों में और सभी शास्त्रों में जो-जो हमको संशय हुआ था वही आपने ज्ञानसूर्य के द्वारा अन्धकार के ही समान विनिष्ट कर दिया है। हे द्विजों में सर्वश्रेष्ठ! आपके प्रसाद अर्थात् अनुग्रह से हम सब प्रकार से वेदों और शास्त्रों में संशय से रहित हो गये हैं अर्थात् अब हमको किसी में कुछ भी संशय नहीं रहा है।

हे ब्रह्मण! जो ब्रह्माजी ने कहा था वह रहस्य के सहित धर्म शास्त्र आपसे सब ओर से अध्ययन करके हम सब कृतकृत्य अर्थात् सफल हो गए हैं। अब हम लोग पुनः यह श्रवण करने की इच्छा करते हैं कि पुराने समय में काली देवी ने हरि प्रभु का जो परमयति और ईश्वर थे, उन्हें किस प्रकार से सती के स्वरूप से मोहित कर दिया था। जो भगवान् हरि सदा ही ध्यान में मग्न रहा करते थे, यम वाले और यतियों में परम श्रेष्ठ थे तथा संसार से पूर्णतया विमुख रहा करते थे, उनको संक्षोभित कर दिया था। अथवा प्रजापति दक्ष की पत्नियों में परम शोभना सती किस रीति से समुत्पन्न थी तथा पत्नी के पाणिग्रहण करने में भगवान शम्भु ने कैसे अपना मन बना लिया था? प्राचीन समय में किस कारण से तथा किस रीति मे दक्ष प्रजापति के कोप से सती ने अपनी देह का त्याग किया था अथवा फिर वही सती गिरिवर हिमवान् की पुत्री के रूप में कैसे समुत्पन्न हुई? फिर उस देवी ने भगवान् कामदेव के शत्रु श्री शिव का आधा शरीर कैसे आहृत कर लिया था? हे द्विजश्रेष्ठ! यह सभी कथा आप हमारे समक्ष विस्तार के साथ वर्णित कीजिये। हे विपेन्द्र! हम यह जानते हैं कि आपके समान अन्य कोई भी संशयों का छेदन करने वाला नहीं है और भविष्य में भी न होगा सो अब आप यह समस्त वृतान्त बताने की कृपा कीजिए।

मार्कण्डेय जी कहा–आप समस्त मुनिगण अब श्रवण वह करिये जो कि मेरा गोपनीय से भी अधिक गोपनीय है तथा परम पुण्य-शुभ करने वाला, अच्छा ज्ञान प्रदान करने वाला तथा परम कामनाओं को पूर्ण करने वाला है। इसे प्राचीन समय में ब्रह्माजी ने महान् आत्मा वाले नारद जी से कहा था। इसके पश्चात् नारद जी ने भी बालखिल्यों के लिए बताया था। उन महात्मा बालखिल्यों ने यवक्रीत मुनि से कहा था और यवक्रीत मुनि ने असित नामक मुनि को यही बताया था। हे द्विजगणों! उन असित मुनि ने विस्तारपूर्वक मुझको बताया था और मैं अब पुरातन कथा को आप सब लोगों को श्रवण कराऊँगा। इसके पूर्व मैं इस जगत् के प्रति परमात्मा चक्रपाणि प्रभु को प्रणिपात करता हूँ। वे परमात्मा व्यक्त और अव्यक्त सत् स्वरूप वाले हैं–वहीं व्यक्ति के रूप से समन्वित हैं। उनका स्वरूप स्थूल है और सूक्ष्म रूप वाला भी है, वे विश्व के स्वरूप वाले वेधा हैं, वे परमेश नित्य हैं और उनका स्वरूप नित्य है तथा उनका ज्ञान भी नित्य है। उनका तेज निर्विकार है। वे विद्या और अविद्या के स्वरूप वाले हैं, ऐसे कालरूप उन परमात्मा के लिए नमस्कार है। परमेश्वर निर्मल हैं, विरागी हैं, व्यापी और विश्वरूप वाले हैं तथा सृष्टि (सृजन) स्थिति (पालन) और अन्त (संहार) के करने वाले हैं, उनके लिए प्रणाम है।

जिसका योगियों के द्वारा चिन्तन किया जाता है, योगीजन वेदान्त पर्यन्त चिन्तन करने वाले हैं, जो अन्तर में परम ज्याति के स्वरूप हैं उन परमेश प्रभु के लिए प्रणाम करता हूँ। लोकों के पितामह भगवान् ब्रह्माजी ने उनकी आराधना करके समस्त सुर-असुर और नर आदि की प्रजा का सृजन किया था। उन ब्रह्माजी से दक्ष जिनमें प्रमुख थे ऐसे प्रजापतियों का सृजन करके मरीचि, अत्रि, पुलह, अंगिरस, ऋतु, पुलस्त्य, वशिष्ठ, नारद, प्रचेतस, भृगु–इन सब दश मानस पुत्रों का उन्होंने सृजन किया था। उसी समय में उनके मानस से सुन्दर रूप वाली वरांगनाओं की समुत्पत्ति हुई थी। वह नाम से सन्ध्या विख्यात हुई थी, उसका सायं-सन्ध्या का यजन किया करते हैं। उस जैसी अन्य कोई भी दूसरी वरांगना देवलोक, मर्त्यलोक और रसातल में भी नहीं हुई थी। ऐसी समस्त गुण-गणों की शोभा से सम्पन्न तीनों कालों में भी नहीं हुई है और न होगी। वह स्वाभाविक सुन्दर और नीले केशों के भार से शोभित होती है। हे द्विज श्रेष्ठों! वह वर्षा ऋतु में मोरनी की भाँति विचित्र केशों के भार से शोभाशालिनी थी। आरक्त और मलिक तथा कर्णों पर्यन्त अलकों से इन्द्र के धनुष और बाल चन्द्र के सृदश शोभायमान थी। विकसित नीलकमल के समान श्याम वर्ण से संयुक्त दोनों नेत्र चकित हिरनी के समान चंचल और शोभित हो रहे थे। हे द्विज श्रेष्ठों! कानों तक फैली हुई स्वाभाविक चंचलता से संयुक्त परम सुन्दर दोनों भौहें थीं जो कामदेव के धनुष के सदृश नील थीं। दोनों भौहों के मध्य भाग से नीचे और निम्न भाग से विस्तृत और उन्नत नासिका थी जो मानों ललाट से तिल के पुण्य के ही समान लावण्य को द्रवित कर रही थी। उनका मुख रक्तकमल की आभा वाला और पूर्ण चन्द्र के तुल्य प्रभा से समन्वित था जो बिम्ब फल के सदृश अधरों की अरुणिमाओं और मनोहर शोभित हो रहा था। सौ सूर्य के समान और लावण्य के गुणों से परिपूर्ण मुख था। दोनों ओर से चिबुक (ठोड़ी) के समीप पहुँचने के लिए उसके दोनों कुच मानो समुद्यत हो रहे थे। हे विप्रगणों! उस सन्धया देवी के दोनों स्तवन राजीव (कमल) की कालिका के समान आकार वाले थे, पीन और उत्तुग्ङ निरन्तर रहने वाले थे। उन कुचों के मुख श्याम वर्ण के थे जो कि मुनियों के हृदय को भी मोहित करने वाले थे। सभी लोगों ने कामदेव की शक्ति के तुल्य ही उस सन्ध्या के मध्यभाग को देखा था जिसमें वलियाँ पड़ रही थीं तथा मध्य भाग ऐसा क्षीण था जैसे मुट्ठी में ग्रहण करने के योग्य रेशमी वस्त्र था।

उनके दोनों ऊरुओं का जोड़ा ऐसा शोभायमान हो रहा था दो ऊर्ध्वभाग में स्थूल था और करभ के सदृश विस्तृत था और थोड़ा झुका हुआ हाथी की सूँड़ के समान था। जो अँगुलियों के दल में संकल कुसुमायुध अर्थात् कामदेव के तुल्य ही दिखलाई दे रहा था। उस सुन्दर दर्शन वाली, शरीर की रोमावली से आवृत मुख पर, जिसके पसीने की बूँदें झलक रही थीं, जो दीर्घ नयनों वाली, चारुहास से समन्वित, तन्वी अर्थात् कृश मध्य भाग वाली जिसके दोनों कान परम सुन्दर थे, तीन स्थलों में गम्भीरता से युक्त तथा छः स्थानों से उन्नत उसको देखकर विधाता उठकर हृदगत को चिन्तन करने लगे थे। वे सृजन करने वाले दक्ष प्रजापति मानस पुत्र मरीचि आदि सब उस परवर्णिनी को देखकर समत्सुक होकर चिन्तन करने लगे थे। इस सृष्टि में इसका क्या कर्म होगा अथवा यह किसकी वर-वर्णिनी होगी। यही वे सभी बड़ी ही उत्सुकता से सोचने लगे थे। हे मुनि सत्तमों! इस तरह से चिन्तन करते हुए उन ब्रह्माजी के मन से वल्गु पुरुष आविर्भूत होकर विनिःसृत हो गया था।

वह पुरुष सुवर्ण के चूर्ण के समान पीली आभा से संयुक्त था, परिपुष्ट उसका वक्ष स्थल था, सुन्दर नासिका थी, सुन्दर सुडौल ऊरु जंघाओं वाला था, नील वेष्टित केशर वाला था, उसकी दोनों भौंहें जुड़ी हुई थीं, चंचल और पूर्ण चन्द्र के सदृश मुख से समन्वित था। कपाट के तुल्य विशाल हृदय पर रोमावली से शोभित था शुभ्र मातंग की सूँड़ के समान पीन तथा विस्तृत बाहुओं से संयुक्त था, रक्त हाथ, लोचन, मुख पाद और करों से उपद्रव वाला था। उस पुरुष का मध्य भाग क्षीण अर्थात् कुश था, सुन्दर दन्तावली थी वह हाथी के सदृश कन्धरा से समन्वित था। विकसित कमल के दलों के समान उनके नेत्र थे तथा केशर घ्राण से तर्पण था, कम्बू के समान ग्रीवा से युक्त, मीन के केतु वाला प्राँश और मकर वाहन था। पाँच पुरुषों के आयुधों वाला, वेगयुक्त और पुष्पों के धनुष से विभूषित था। कटाक्षों के पात के द्वारा दोनों नेत्रों की भ्रमित करता हुआ परम कान्त था। सुगन्धित वायु के भ्रान्त और श्रृंगार रस से सेविक इस प्रकार के उस पुरुष को देखकर वे सब मानस पुत्र जिनमें दक्ष प्रजापति प्रमुख थे, विस्मय से आविष्ट मन वाले होते हुए अत्यधिक उत्सुकता को प्राप्त हुए थे और मन विकार को प्राप्त हो गया था।

But while unemployment is down, the latest labour market figures reveal a surge in part-time jobs as employers remain anxious about long-term recovery prospects, suggesting it may not be time to hang out the bunting just yet.

With more of us working fewer hours and with a resulting earnings gap to close, there's arguably never been a better time to set up a business you can run in your spare time from home. Whether it's to help make ends meet, or to follow your passion, or maybe even both, we've asked the experts to come up with 50 practical and cheap ways to make some extra cash.

1 Antiques/collectibles dealing Know your stuff when it comes to certain kinds of collectibles? If so this can be a great way to make money from a hobby. Trading sites such as eBay make it easier than ever to reach your target market, according to Trent Hamm, author of US money-saving blog thesimpledollar.com. "I had some success with this myself in the past, trading cards and video games," he says.

2 Babysitting If you can spare a few evenings and know any parents desperate to get out, there are few simpler ways to make a few extra pounds.

3 Bed and breakfast Got a spare room? Live near somewhere of interest to tourists, or close to a student area? Note you'll almost certainly need planning, mortgage lender and health and safety approvals first.

4 Biscuit/sweet making Homemade biscuits and confectionery can be a great seller, says Hamm. "Bake and package them well, and try reselling through a local gift shop. People in your social network may buy batches for special occasions."

5 Cake making/decorating If you enjoy baking and have an artistic touch, making and decorating cakes can be a really satisfying way of earning extra money. "One of my mother's old friends does this and makes quite a bit on the side," says Hamm.

6 Car boot sales This is a part-time occupation that increases earnings and broadens horizons as you make sales and get to travel, says Emma Jones, author of Working 5 to 9: How to Start a Successful Business in your Spare Time, and founder of the website enterprisenation.com. "Consider selling specialist items and building a reputation for being the go-to person; offering your knowledge and expertise with the product can increase the price you're paid," she suggests.

7 Car cleaning/valeting Have a meticulous eye for detail and love to get things spotless? This could be a perfect side business for you. "Many people are quite happy to pay well for this service," points out Hamm.

8 Catering Formal qualifications are not strictly required for catering, which is more about producing and delivering good food. However, the organisational aspects may be easier after some instruction, such as a City & Guilds certificate (NVQ or other) in hospitality and catering.

9 Census distributor Every 10 years a census is held in England and Wales. The next one is in 2011, but you can register now to be considered for a range of related roles in your area, including collection and delivery. See censusjobs.co.uk.

10 Childcare There's great potential to earn extra money from looking after kids, but you'll need to adore children (not just your own), have boundless energy and patience and in many cases must satisfy Ofsted criteria.

Any adult who looks after another person's child for more than two hours on any one day in a location other than the child's home (so excluding most babysitters and nannies) needs to register with Ofsted – it's not a particularly complicated process but does include medical, criminal and domestic safety checks. Nannies can look after the children of up to two sets of parents, in one of their home environments, without being Ofsted-registered.

11 Computer repairer/troubleshooter Despite the proliferation of technology in our lives, many people still find computers complicated to maintain and terrifying if they go wrong. If you have a reassuring manner and are not fazed by the inner workings of a PC, offer your services locally and let word of mouth do the rest. "I had some success doing thisin the past," says Hamm.

12 Cosmetics sales This is very much a social business activity so be prepared to spend lots of time meeting and talking to people. You'll be selling mainly by networking and often through parties in other people's homes, so an outgoing manner and immaculate personal presentation skills are essential.

13 Data entry Perhaps not the most thrilling of part-time pursuits, but data entry can nevertheless offer an extremely steady (not to mention flexible) source of extra income. You generally get paid for the number of entries you make rather than by the hour, which means you can go back and forth to it when you get a spare few minutes.

14 Dinner preparation "I recently met a woman who earned quite a bit of money as a very part-time chef," says Hamm. "Once a week, she would go to someone's house and prepare a homemade meal for their family, then do all the dishes and cleaning up. This gives the family plenty of together time, while earning her some cash in hand." If you love to cook, this can be a great extra earnings opportunity, but be prepared to put some effort into finding your customers.

15 Become a DJ It goes without saying that you need a deep love of music and an extensive collection of tunes before you can even consider DJing, but as much of the work is at evenings and weekends, it could make a perfect side business. Be ready to cater for a range of crowds and musical preferences, not just your passion. Learn the ropes by concentrating first on weddings and birthday parties or by doing roadie work for an established DJ, which will gain you useful contacts.

16 Be a doula Jasmine Birtles, the founder of websitemoneymagpie.com, says you can make between £12 and £15 an hour or £250-£500 for a birth by being a doula – a birth partner and post-birth partner. "If you've had a baby and you want to help new mothers, do a short course with Britishdoulas.co.uk and work locally," she says. "You do what a grandmother or sister might do for a new mum, such as giving moral support, helping around the house, caring for the baby and supporting the whole family."

17 Flower arranging Imagine doing what you love and getting paid for it, which is what this idea brings to mind. "The nature of the product means you're likely to cater to a local audience, so why not impress with a business card and delivery car adorned with flower power," suggests Jones of enterprisenation.com. "It'll turn heads and attract new business as you turn corners."

18 Garage/garden sales "One person I know holds a garage sale at their house almost every weekend during summer," says Hamm. "They get a lot of regular customers who stop by almost every weekend to see what's on sale. That person then goes to neighbours and friends and offers to sell their stuff for them, splitting the proceeds. People are usually happy to do this since they can get rid of unwanted items and earn a bit of money, too."

19 Gardening services "I've had requests from others for people willing to do this, so the demand is out there," says Hamm. "To put it simply, some people are willing to pay others to get a vegetable or flower garden started so that they can have access to ultra-fresh produce without doing all the legwork."

20 Making greetings cards If you're the kind of person who loves making things, why not try your hand at cards? Ask a local shopkeeper what kind sells best and follow their advice, working to a distinctive style of your own. Then try selling to family, friends and local businesses. Be mindful of material costs and time taken though, as wastage can be expensive in such a low-value product.

21 Handyman services Know your way round a toolbox? Let people know that they can call you for little repair jobs, relatively straightforward DIY tasks such as putting up shelves or assembling flat-pack furniture. "You'd be amazed at the simple things people are willing to pay others to help them with," says Hamm.

22 Host and teach foreign students "This is a great way of renting your room without getting stuck with the flatshare from hell," says Birtles. "Foreign students don't usually stay longer than a couple of months at a time, so if they're annoying at least you know they'll go soon."

Usually the deal is B&B, but sometimes you need to give them an evening meal too. Get in touch with your nearest English language schools and let them know you have a room to rent, Birtles advises. The website idiom.co.uk has a list of schools in the UK. You can make up to £200 a week depending on where you live.

23 House cleaning "This is an idea you can start yourself, or consider being part of a house-cleaning franchise such as Molly Maid where you have the benefit of being your own boss as well as the support of a central team," says Jones.

24 Ironing/laundry services "Even in these cash-strapped times, some people hate ironing so much they're willing to pay others to do it (at least in the posh parts of town)," says Birtles of moneymagpie.com, who suggests either registering with domestic agencies such asmrshunts.co.uk or setting up your own local service.

"Check out the competition, see how much they charge, and undercut. Either work for an hourly rate, a fee per item or a fee per lb," she says. You should get between £8 and £12 per hour, between 50p and £1 per item or between 50p and £1 per lb of clothes, depending on where you work."

25 Jewellery selling Never mind Tupperware – if you have jewellery you no longer wear or want, try organising a party to sell it, says Jones. "Websites that organise these parties, such as ounces2pounds.co.uk, are going great guns in signing up ladies who want to earn extra income in their spare time," she says.

26 Knitting/alteration/sewing services A big growth area, as more people come to appreciate the value in repairing and patching up clothes. If you're handy with a sewing machine, there's serious money to be made. Once you get known locally, word-of-mouth should do the rest.

27 Leaflet distributing Delivering leaflets to people's houses could be a profitable and healthy way to spend a few spare hours a week. Call into your local shops and restaurants to see if they need help distributing flyers, menus and so on.

28 Market research Get paid for your opinions by signing up withsarosresearch.com and taking part in focus groups, suggests Birtles. "You get between £50-£100 cash, plus food and drink for saying what you think about products or services for a few hours. Or be the one asking the questions. Ipsos Mori offers flexible hours to people willing to do phone interviews or knock on doors to ask people questions. You make between £8-£10 an hour on average."

29 Musical performance If you can play a musical (especially orchestral) instrument to a high enough standard, know a few choice solo pieces and look presentable, spread the word locally – weddings and other formal functions can be a lucrative source of performance income.

30 Online surveys It's possible to make pocket money by filling in internet surveys – though moneymagpie.com's Birtles advises caution, as there are hundreds of bogus companies on the net. "Toluna, Ciao!, Lightspeed Panel, and Valued Opinions are all pukka," she says. "You make between 50p and £5 per survey. Click here for more information and a list of genuine survey companies.

31 Online trading Sites such as eBay and Amazon make it easy for people to dabble in e-commerce. "Start with a clearout of your attic," suggests Dan Wilson, author of Make Serious Money on eBay. "If you start to sell other goods, focus on things you can get hold of easily, or are passionate about. And have an eye on the Christmas market: think about what will be selling well in a few months' time."

32 Personal organiser/assistant If you are good at filing and managing tasks, and know someone who isn't, why not offer to share your expertise with them for a small consideration? Being organised is a valuable skill, and whether it's for a small company or a friend there may be more of a market for this than meets the eye. Ask around friends or look on listings websites including gumtree.com.

33 Personal shopping "This is an idea that nicely taps into our desire for personal service," says Jones. "There's also potential to niche this business, for example focusing on time-starved ladies. Making it niche brings down marketing costs and increases customer loyalty."

34 Personal tutoring If you are a part-time teacher or are perhaps taking a career break to look after young children, this can be a great way to make a little money while keeping your syllabus knowledge up to date. Try advertising locally or registering with an agency like Personal Tutors.

35 Pet grooming "Many people loathe bathing their pets and trimming their hair – I know I do," says Hamm. "Pet groomers can do this for a small fee – a perfect job for a person who loves dogs and cats."

36 Pet minding/walking "Dog-walking is a fantastic earner if you love animals and enjoy the outdoors," says Birtles. "On average you can make between £10-£15 per hour, per dog." Get good and you can be walking two or more at a time. Offer pet-minding as well and you can make a whole business out of it. "You'll need public liability insurance in case something happens to the dogs or members of the public," she warns.

37 Online referrals expert There's money to be made from your email address book: a surprising number of companies will pay you if you can persuade your friends to become their customers. Check out the websiterefermehappy.com, an online matching service where you can get referral bonuses from companies like Sky, Virgin Media and First Direct.

38 Rent out your stuff You can rent pretty much anything now, although space is still the most profitable "item", says Birtles. "Rent your driveway on parkatmyhouse.com if you live somewhere popular, or your possessions from a baby bath to your lawnmower on sites likerentnotbuy.co.uk and Zilok ," she advises. "Currently there are more items on offer than requests to lease things, but it's worth a try."

39 Slivers of Time OK, this isn't strictly a business idea, butsliversoftime.com matches people with a few spare hours here and there with part-time work. Register with the site, then put your spare time on the calendar. Your hours are sent to local agencies and businesses who regularly use part-time workers.

40 Selling ad space on a personal blog This is not a big money-earner to start with but could be if you work at it, reckons Birtles. "Set up your own blog (do it for free with blogger.com) and fill it with great writing, photos, videos and anything else you're passionate about," she advises. "Get ads automatically through Google Adsense and make a few pence every time someone clicks on an ad."

41 Scrapbook making Many people dream of having beautiful scrapbooks, says Hamm. "They collect all the materials they want to go in them, but never follow through on the actual creation. You can step in here – take their ideas and materials and assemble a scrapbook for them."

42 Selling lost luggage Auction houses round the country routinely sell off lost luggage that the airlines have failed to match with their owners. "For example, Greasby's in south London sells off BA's lost items every week," points out Birtles. Maha Shivaratri means "The Great Night of Siva". The night of Shiva falls on the eve of the New Moon. The night is symbolic of a condition prior to creation and refers to the chaos that existed before light. But this chaotic darkness is not a negative condition. It is pure consciousness without the pollution of knowledge. In Buddha's terminology it is the Emptiness of Nirvana. Maha Shivaratri is the prime time for every soul to get into the primordial consciousness of non-existence or Nirvana.

One is required to keep vigil during the night in order to receive Shiva's grace.It is a great opportunity to connect with the divine formless form of Lord Shiva, the Lingam, who symbolizes 'all-auspiciousness', and to invite these energies in your life. In essence, Maha Shivaratri signifies the transition from the darkness of gloom and ignorance to the dawn of divine joy and knowledge.

Mahashivaratri is one of the important Hindu festivals celebrated with religious fervor across the length and breadth of India. Followers of Lord Shiva consider the festival very special, as it is the time to show their love and devotion to their favorite deity. It is significant in every devotee's life, as it also tests ones ability to abstain from food (because fast is observed on the day) and remain vigil in the night without sleeping (because one has to remain awake all through the night, on Mahashivratri). Importance In Hinduism

According to the Hindu mythology, Lord Shiva declared that the rituals performed by his devotees on the 14th day of the dark fortnight in the month of Phalgun please him the most. Therefore, year by year, the day is observed as Mahashivratri, wherein devotees observe fast, sing songs and bhajans and offer prayers to the Almighty to seek his blessings. Pujas conducted in Lord Shiva temples during the day have significance too. This is because the rituals are conducted strictly in accordance with the method that is prescribed in Shiva Purana, a Hindu epic. According to the Purana, poojas are conducted once in every three hours, on Maha Shivaratri.

Importance In Human Lives

It is believed that the devotion of Lord Shiva on Mahashivaratri would freed the devotee from the past sins. Moreover, the devotee would reach the adobe of Lord Shiva and live there happily, because he/she is liberated from the cycle of birth and death, once he/she attains moksha or salvation. Therefore, all the devotees of Lord Shiva would flock the temples to offer their prayers. To serve the purpose, jujube fruits, stalks of Bilwa leaves, flowers and garlands are offered to the Shiva Linga by the devotees. If the devotee celebrates the festival at home, he/she would perform the Mahashivratri Puja by taking a holy bath (in warm water) early in the morning, wearing new clothes and then smearing bhasm (holy ash) on their forehead.

Importance For Women

Maha Shivaratri is especially important for women. Ladies, both married and unmarried, would perform Shiva Puja and observe fast with great devotion and sincerity. This is predominantly done to appease Lord Shiva along with his consort Goddess Parvati, who is often called Ma Gauri. It is believed that Ma Gauri bestows marital bliss on unmarried women and blesses the married women with healthy and blissful married life. Since Lord Shiva is regarded as the ideal husband by the Hindu women, the unmarried women would not miss to observe the stringent fast on Shivaratri.












About Lord Shiva
Shiva (Sanskrit: Auspicious One) is one of the main deities of Hinduism that is worshipped as the paramount lord by the Shaivaite sects of India.

In Hinduism, Lord Shiva is regarded as the representation of the Supreme Being. He is known as the third element in the Hindu Trinity (Trimurti), the other two members being Lord Brahma - the creator and Lord Vishnu - the protector. Shiva is the destructive form of the Almighty. As the cycle of destruction and recreation is always in a circle, Shiva’s primary responsibility is maintaining the life cycle. Scholars say, as the Mahakaal, Shiva destroys and dissolves everything into nothingness but as Shankara, he also reproduces that which has been destroyed and dissolved. His symbol of Lingam or the phallus represents this reproductive power.

Lord Shiva is also considered to be the most unique of all Hindu gods and also the God of all. A great ascetic, Shiva is the only godhead who is forever in deep meditation, totally absorbed in contemplation in His abode, Kailaasa Mountain in the great Himalaya. Lord Shiva is also said to be inseparable from Shakti - Parvati the daughter of Himavaan - Haimavati. There is no Shiva without Shakti and no Shakti without Shiva, the two are one - or the absolute state of being.

Shiva is often shown with many faces, as creator, destroyer and preserver in total command of the cosmos. He contains both good and evil. He is moody, free of inhibitions, easy to please, protector of the down trodden, and has the power to alter the laws of destiny. Thus, it is Lord Shiva is known as the God of mercy and kindness. He protects his devotees from all evil that are always around us. He blesses his followers with grace, knowledge and peace.

Lord Shiva is said to be half man and half woman. In the full figure of Siva the male and female principles are united. Shiva Linga - the symbol of Lord Shiva which consists of both Lingam (phallus) and yoni (the female organ) represent the totality of his nature and the totality of all created existence.

Appearance and Attributes of Lord Shiva
Lord Shiva is shown either in meditating or in the form of a Dancing God Nataraj where his dance is to the beat and rhythm of creation. He is also shown in sculptures with many hands. One pair of hands, for example, represents the balance between life and death. Shiva is 'tri netra' or three eyed, and is 'neela kantha' - blue-necked (having consumed poison to save the world from destruction). Besides, there are a lot many attributes associated with Lord Shiva. Here is a brief description of some of the important symbols that depict Lord Shiva. Each of his depiction signifies a different aspect of his Supreme Being.

Unclad body covered with ashes: This form of Lord Shiva depicts that Lord Shiva’s presence is much higher than this physical phenomenon. According to some scholars, Shiva’s body smeared with cemetery ash points to the philosophy of the life and death and the fact that death is the ultimate reality of the life.

Jata (Matted Hair): The flow of his matted hair represents Shiva as the Lord of Wind or Vayu, who is the subtle form of breath present in all living beings. Thus it is Shiva which is the lifeline for all living being. He is Pashupatinath.

Sacred Ganga: The holiest of the holy rivers, Ganga flows from the matted hair of Shiva. According to a legend, Shiva allowed an outlet to the great river to traverse the earth and bring purifying water to human being. Ganga also denotes fertility - one of the creative aspects of the Rudra.

The Third Eye: Lord Shiva is known as the three eyed Lord or Tryambaka Deva. The sun is his right eye, the moon left while the third eye of Shiva on his forehead is the eye of wisdom. It is the eye that looks beyond the obvious. The third eye can search evil from anywhere and destroys it completely.

Half-Open Eyes: The half-open eyes show that the universes cycle in process. When the eyes are completely closed it signifies the dissolvent of the universe and when it is completely open a new cycle of creation begins.

Crescent: Shiva bears on his head the crescent of the panchami (fifth day) moon. This is placed near the fiery third eye and this shows the power of Soma, the sacrificial offering, which is the representative of moon. It means that Shiva possesses the power of procreation along with the power of destruction. The moon is also a measure of time, thus Crescent also represent his control over time.

The Cobra Necklace: This suggests that Shiva is beyond the powers of death and is often the sole support in case of distress. He swallowed the poison kalketu for the wellbeing of the Universe. The deadly cobra represents that “death” aspect that Shiva has thoroughly conquered. The cobras around his neck also represent the dormant energy, called Kundalini, the serpent power. The snake curled three times around the neck of Lord Shiva depicts the past, present and future time. The snake looking in the right direction of Lord Shiva signifies that the Lord's perpetual laws of reason and justice preserve natural order in the universe.

The Vibhuti: Vibhuti is a three line of ashes drawn on the forehead that signifies the Immortality of the soul and manifested glory of the Lord.

Tiger Skin: Lord Shiva is shown sitting on or wearing a tiger skin. The tiger is the vehicle of Shakti, the Goddess of power and force. Shiva is beyond and above any kind of force. He is the master of Shakti. The tiger skin that he wears symbolizes victory over every force. Tiger also represent lust. Thus sitting on Tiger skin, Shiva indicates that he has conquered lust.

The Elephant & Deer Skin: Shiva also wears elephant skins. Elephants represent pride. Wearing elephant skin, Shiva indicates that he has conquered pride. Similarly deer represent the flickering mind. Shiva wears deer skin which indicates that he has controlled the mind perfectly.

Rudraksha Necklace: ‘Rudra’ is the other name of Shiva. It also means strict or uncompromising and ‘aksha’ means eye. Rudraksha, the necklace worn by Lord Shiva shows that he is firm about his cosmic laws and to maintain law and order in the universe. The necklace has 108 beads, which symbolize the elements used in the creation of the world.

Damaru (Drum): A small drum with two sides alienated from each other by a thin neck-like structure represents the two utterly different states of existence, unclear and clear. When a damaru is shaken, the sound formed denotes Nada, the cosmic sound of AUM, which can be heard during deep meditation.

Trishul (Trident): A three-branched trident shown adjoining to Lord Shiva symbolizes His three fundamental powers will, action and knowledge. As a weapon the trident represents the instrument of punishment to the evil doer on all the three planes - spiritual, subtle and physical.

Nandi, the Bull: Nandi is said to be the vehicle of Lord Shiva. The bull represents both power and ignorance. Lord Shiva's use of the bull as his vehicle expresses the idea that He removes ignorance and bequeaths power of wisdom on His followers.

The penance of sage Matangaj was disturbed by the tolling of bronze bells which were hanging on the flying chariots of Yaksha at mount Mahendra. Sage cursed them to born on the land of mortal as Kansara, but also relieve them by the boon of being protected by Goddess Mahakali.

The first man of origin named Krutvirya was born, and thus the hei-hei tribe started. King Krutvirya was the son of Mahabhujang and Spiritual mare. Mahabhujang and the spiritual mare were none other but another appearance of Lord Vishnu and Goddess Laxmi on earth under the influence of curse given to each other.

King Krutvirya was very brave, mighty and sovereign emperor. Kartikvirya was son of Krutvirya who was also famous as Sahastra Arjuna. Sahastra Arjuna was married to four sisters of Sage Parshuram, they were named Shwetakshi, Shwetmala, Chandrasya, and Chandrika respectively. Parshurama has declared the war against Kshatriya and oath to carnage them. Under that oath Parshurama killed Sahastra Arjuna. But on the request of his sisters he forgives their unborn sons. All sisters went to Haradwar and gave birth to princes named Jayant, Vijay, Vanmali and Jayadrath.

With the boon from Lord Shiva, those four Princes were became proficient in metallurgy and able to do levy free business in any kingdom and being assured to have Maa Parvati as their Mother-Goddess, they went to Vishwakarm to avail required knowledge of metallurgy and art of making metal utensils and ornaments.

Being acquaintance and proficient in required knowledge in metallurgy, they started their business in various parts of Indian region.

According to an incident written in Ramayana about how Kansaras were exampted to do levy free business in the reign of Rama in Ayodhya; that proves the art of making utensils and ornaments developed during Tretayuga, hence the Hei-hei tribe.

King Chaud of kingdom Kanchinagar had capture four princes in their un-pious condition as the revenge of insult of his Princess and killed three of them. But forth prince named Jayadratha survived and with the grace of Maa Kali became the king of Avanti (Ujjain). He was then renamed as Dharmapal and was also known as grandfather of Kansara tribe. He built a majestic temple of Maa Mahakali in Avantipur (Mahakaleshwar).

Dharmapal reign was spread across Gujarat, Maharashtra and Konkan. He had different queens at the land of Gujarat, Maharashtra and Konkan. The Progenies of those queens are known as Gujarati, Kasara and Konkni Kansara respectively.

His progenies from queen of Gujarat had domiciled in Champaner and built a temple on a mountain and named that mountain ‘Pavitragadh’, but it later ill-worded as ‘Pawagadh’.

At the verge of destruction of Champaner kingdom Maa Mahakali commanded Kansara to move to the safer places. On the command of Maa Mahakali Kansara scattered in form of various groups and dwelled to different locations of Gujarat like Amdavad, Vishnagar, Vijapur, Kutch and Surat. Later they were sub-classified as Amdavadi, Vishnagari, Vijapuri, Soni, and Surati Kansara.
